Beasts and Where to Find Them"
The Harry Potter franchise jumps back in time to explore
the wizarding world of 1926 New York. This is an amazingly
delightful romp inthe Harry Potter Universe with great special
effects and lots of NYC flavor mixed into the familiar references.
The film is the first of five movies which chronicle the
adventures of writer Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) in New
York's secret community of witches and wizards seventy years
before Harry Potter reads Scamander's celebrated book in school.
Scamander arrives in the big Apple as part of a global study
of fantastic beasts, only to discover that the city is being
threatened by both mystical acts of destruction byt an unknown
force and a group of religious extremist No-Majs (the American
term for Muggles, i.e. those unable to use magic) who are
set on exposing the existence of witches in New York politics.
There is also a rebel group within the magical comminity lead
by Percival Graves (Colin Farrel) whose ambition is to harness
the power of the dangerous force and bend it to his will to
allow for a coup of his superiors, who are preoccupied with
capturing a renegade mage named Gellert Grindelwald..
Unfortunately, Scamander gets caught up in this conflict
when some of the magical creatures in his care are accidentally
released and he encounters a group of local witches, Porpentina
Goldstein (Katherine Waterston) his future wife and her sister
Queenie (Alison Sudol) who become his protectors and later
collaborators in exposing the villain.
